Moody Foodie Report: Kazbar

I love to eat but I was never the adventurous type when it comes to food. As of recent years, however, I got used to eating out and trying new dishes, with friends of course. I realized that I wouldn't know the finer things in life if I don't go out of my comfort zone and try them for myself. So, with recommendations from friends, I managed to get myself acquainted with other kinds of cuisines.

I was always the one who would go for the conventional I-know-this-dish-so-I-will-order-it when eating outside, but I figured that I should stop that. I would actually check the menu, see the chef's recommendations, and even ask the staff for their best seller or what they think was the best. There were other ways to be able to try out new food as well, you just have to put in a little effort so as to enjoy the good stuff.

Okay, I'm gonna stop with the random blabber. I just really want to share a restaurant that I tried out recently. The name is Kazbar, a restaurant and bar serving Middle Eastern and Turkish dishes. The resto was located at 25 Church Street, in the area of Raffles Place. It was my friend who was working in the area who recommended the place, since my other friend wanted something different.

It was a Friday night when we went for dinner, and just after office hours. I was kind of surprised to see how packed the area was. It was probably because of the happy hour in almost all the restos in the area. Fortunately, the place was easy to find, because I do not wish to walk around a couple of times in the place with so many people.

The place has a relaxed but a little upbeat vibe. The inside looked spacious but we decided to have a seat in the alfresco area. The lights were noticeably a little din, but I guess it was like that for most restaurants of the same theme. Anyway, we ordered what my friend had recommended for us. For starters we had Labneh and Merguez, and for main dish, we had Shish Taouk and Mix Kofta Kebab.

Labneh is a cold starter made of Greek yogurt mixed with garlic-infused oil and mint. It was served with warm pita bread. Merguez is spicy grilled sausage, choice of lamb or chicken, served with garlic sauce and homemade harissa. Shish Taouk is actually grilled chicken kebab. Mix Kofta kebab are grilled spiced minced lamb and chicken, made separately. I really am not sure how to describe the Kofta kebab, but it was also delicious.

The personal favorite of mine was the Labneh. I am not a very big fan of yogurts, and I have never tried the Greek ones before. But it being mixed together with garlic and mint flavors is really interesting. There was a taste that tease your palate to make you want to eat more. But you will eventually get sick of the flavor if you eat a lot. So take it as a starter, and do not make it your main dish. But I really love this dish so I will try making it at home.

Kazbar is a really nice place to hang out for drinks, and they even offer good food. Do note however that the place gets busy after office hours.

The Mad Poet Gastrobar

A friend of mine came to Singapore for a visit and we had arranged to meet. It was another friend of ours who made the arrangement actually, and as per her recommendations, we went to Cross Street for a laid-back dinner.

I've been in the vicinity of Cross Street before, when I was doing my Beer Trail. But at that time, I was only at 25 Cross street, which is a cluster of restaurants and bars. The place in general was quite good for drinks and dinner because the target market for that place was mainly the office workers. Now, we visited the other side of that area which is literally just across the road - 20 Cross Street.

The place has the same ambiance, but with a much more romantic feel to it. What adds that kind of atmosphere was the led lights that decorated the ceiling of Nankin Row which made it look like stars. It was very pretty that my friends and I can't get enough of taking photos there.

We visited was The Mad Poet Gastrobar, which my friend and her colleagues frequents. Honestly, I had a hard time finding the place because the signage for its name was so small and pretty much hidden. After a few rounds in Nankin Row, and careful inspection of the every restaurant's signage, I managed to find it.

Food. My friend was confident about the food menu of the establishment, mainly because she had already tried everything in it. Trusting her sense of flavors, we just ordered what we wanted. We had a chicken chili con carne, chicken cordon bleu, and crispy potato skins, the last two were my requests.

I'm not a big fan of Mexican food, mainly because I can't handle spicy dishes well, but ever since I tried Baja Fresh, I started to like it. The chili con carne at Mad Poet tasted really good, maybe I just have not tried other chili con carne's, but it was tasty. It was spicy, but the cheese gives it a milder taste. It was also served with nachos and ciabata, and the bread was so good.

The cordon bleu was not the typical deep-fried style, but more like an oven-baked chicken meat-wrapped bacon-wrapped cheese. It is served with asparagus and cherry tomatoes, and hollandaise sauce. So far, it was the best cordon bleu I have tried.

The crispy potato skins were delicious but I find them more typical. One plate comes with four potato skins, so that makes it two potatoes used. It wasn't literally potato skins per se, but the skin with a thin layer of potato, served with bacon bits, cheese, sour cream, and spring onions, and salsa on the side.
The servings were good for sharing, and the prices were reasonable. I got to enjoy good food, in a nice place, and I only had to pay twenty dollars for it. That twenty dollars even includes a glass of red wine that my friend ordered for herself. So I would say that with the quality of the food, the prices are very reasonable.

Great food. Great service. Great ambiance. The Mad Poet Gastrobar is a place that I would definitely visit again.

Just Want Coffee

This is one lovely little cafe in the neighborhood of Everton Park. I just stumbled upon this cafe while I was talking a walk in the area so I decided to add it in my list. And I was just glad that I tried it out. Why wouldn't I be if there is such good coffee, good food and friendly barista?

The Coffee. They have quite the interesting menu, well at least for me. Where could I ever find a flower infused coffee? So that really caught my attention and I just have to try that. Cappuccino is what I usually order, but a Rose Latte doesn't sound so bad. It was even better when served with a pretty latte art dashed with those little pink shavings. It is a cup of cuteness with the taste of heaven.

I would normally have two cups of coffee in one sitting, more so if I liked the coffee. Besides the normal espresso, latte, cappuccino, macchiato which you will normally find in all the restaurants, they also offer hand-brewed coffee. That means more happiness in a cup and I wouldn't let that chance slip by. So for my second cup, I had just that, and it was served in a fancy cup as well.

I am not the espresso kind of person, but their coffee was rich in flavor and the milk foam was thick and creamy. I was not able to taste the flower flavor for the Rose Latte that I ordered. It was because I don't know how rose flower tasted, or because the coffee was too rich that the infused flavoring syrup was overtaken. Either way, I was happy with the coffee that I was served that objectivity accounts to none.

The Foodie. I went to the cafe right after my night shift so I was pretty hungry. I wasn't a big fan of breakfast plates together with coffee so I tried the waffle which seemed to be a specialty. I ordered the Banana and Dark Chocolate waffle plate. It was a huge serving of waffle that comes with, as the name suggests, chocolate ice cream, chocolate syrup, and banana slices. Oh! There was also a good portion of whipped cream just for the note. Honestly, it was kind of difficult to eat but it was certainly delicious. I actually ordered it by recommendation of the staff.

But despite the huge serving of the waffle, I was still hungry! Blame it to the night shift. So, I also tried their sandwich as per the personal favorite of the friendly female barista - Honey Chicken in Olive bread. Even the sandwich was really good. I advise that it should be eaten while still warm because it did not tasted as good when it dropped to room temperature. Also, you might want to ask what else would be included in the sandwich just in case you are kind of picky with food.

The Place. It was generally a small place just like a normal cafe. There were only a few tables and chairs inside the shop and a few outdoor seats. It was fine and all because I usually prefer to be in the counter seat. If you plan to go in a big group, please make reservations ahead of time to ensure that you will be getting enough seats. The place tends to be busy especially on weekends.

I went to the place on a Saturday (30th November 2013) brunch time (around 1000 to 1100hrs) and it was already busy. I was lucky to have a seat by the counter. There wasn't much to take note about the interior of the cafe. The most outstanding was the colorful menu board mounted on the wall opposite the counter. I believe it contained their best-sellers. They also have a chalkboard outside the cafe for their specials.

The Whereabouts. Located in the peaceful neighborhood of Everton Park, the cafe sits in a corner of an HDB. It could be easily missed as it wasn't that visible from the main roads (junction of Neil and Cantonment Roads). The vicinity was quiet with a bit of greenery making the area a bit more cooler and perfect for a stroll.

The nearest MRT station would be Outram Park (NE line). Nearest bus stops available were Blk 3 at Neil Road (service numbers: 61, 120, 166, 167, 196, 197) and Maritime House at Cantonment Road (service numbers: 75, 167, 196). Click here for the map.

Chye Seng Huat Hardware Coffee Bar

25.04.2013

Back in my college days, just a few years ago, I came up with the idea of a 'coffee bar'. I was a frequent customer of a chained coffee shop near my university and I would go there with friends after school hours. We usually visit on the evening and leave a little past midnight. My addiction to ice-blended coffee, or frapuccino, during those days led me to the idea of a coffee bar.

Not long after I came up with that idea, a game application in a social networking site I am suscribed to appeared under the name of Coffee Bar. That quite frustrated me that I didn't even try that game app. Now, a few years after that, I came across a real coffee bar. This time, I was excited to see it for myself.

Chye Seng Huat Hardware Coffee Bar was recommended to me by an acquaintance who was experienced with coffee matters. The name was misleading and so was the establishment itself. Despite having a 'hardware' in its name, the place was actually a cafe. And, no, they are not selling nails, woods and any kinds of harware stuff for merchandise.

The name, as I heard, came from the fact that the area was known for hardware stores. It was like a tribute to the place. True enough that there were 'Seng Huat'-named hardwares nearby.

image

Design . As I've said earlier, the establishment façade would not suggest that  it was a cafe. Passing by there without knowledge would probably make you ignore the place thinking it was one of those hardwares.

image

The cafe exterior was so plain that it appears to be closed from across the street. There was a wooden signage big enough to see from afar saying 'Chye Seng Huat Hardware' with a design like that of a common store's. From the outside, there would really be no suggestion that coffee brewing is happening behind the walls.

image

I was confused at first too until I saw a lady come out from the unconspicuous sidedoor. Then, I tried to see through the small glass panels in the window. It seems to be busy inside and so I decided to enter.

image

image

Awkward as I usually am during my first visits, I had no idea where to sit or even place order. At least, I saw people placing order so I queued up.   There was a bar counter in the middle of the cafe and I believe it was in the shape of a water drop. Machine and hand coffee brewing and order taking and a little of dishwashing were happening inside this oddly shaped bar.

image

image

There was only a number of seats inside the cafe, surrounding the bar. There were bar stools in the counter and you can watch upclose the hand-brewed coffee making.

image

One huge mirror was placed in front of the curving end of the bar. And, of course, making use of the space, there was a long table and bar stools below the mirror. Mirrors create an illussion of space thus making the cafe appear bigger. In this case though, I don't think it helped much besides adding aesthetic value and replacing framed artworks with a practical item.

image

On the left side of the bar was a shelf made of round Iron metals welded together. It was the most unique shelf I've seen in my life. It has a rustic feeling, originality and weirdness in it. It covers almost the entire wall holding the merchandise of the cafe. Once again, they're not nails or such stuff. There were coffee making devices of various kinds.

image

Small wooden tables were also attached on this side of the wall. The tables were so small that they can only hold a small laptop and your coffee and pastry order. It was good enough for me though.

image

image

The other side of the cafe holds a few tables and chairs. There was also a table holding magazines and post cards for art advertisements.

image

There were also al fresco tables outside the cafe. It was more peaceful there but I couldn't bear with the summer heat. Next to the cafe in the same compound was the coffee roasting facilities a coffee beans store. I didn't check that part since I am not interested in buying coffee beans at the moment.

image

Coffee and Pastry. The CSHH Coffee Bar was established by Papa Palheta which is one of the best coffee roasters in Singapore. I had enjoyed the ambiance of the cafe and the friendliness of the staff. And the coffee was excellent as I had expected.

image

I first ordered a cappuccino and had another cup of hand-brewed black coffee. The cappuccino was full-bodied but the foam and milk was not very thick and creamy. Even so, it was delicious. I love the latte art too.

image

The hand-brewed black coffee was really good as well. It was my first time ordering for a simple black coffee. I believe the beans used were ones from Kenya a the staff told me that it has a fruitty flavor. True enough, the coffee was flavorful but I can't really figure out what it is. I enjoyed half of it as it is, and the other half with milk after I was offered with it.

image

The chocolate cake was also delicious. It was to my liking although I would prefer it to be more moist. The chocolate was rich and the sponge was not hard. There were also melted chocolate bits inside the sponge that gave it a more chocolatey flavor.

image

Service. As I've mentioned the staff were all friendly and accommodating. They also try to build rapport with their customers as much as possible which gives the cafe a warm feeling.

image

The one in the cashier managed to give me suggestion when I ordered for my second round of coffee since there were no queue at that time. They actually try to get me to seat in the bar counter where I can watch the coffee brewing upclose. Unfortunately, I w a more peaceful seat hence sitting opposite that side. I apprraciate the effort in trying to entertain me though.

image

As per my observations, the staff provides prompt service to the customers. They were also very cheerful and accommodating. They try to address the customers' needs as much as possible. The service was casual but professional. That's what I like about cafes - the service with a casual feel to it.

Whereabouts. Chye Seng Huat Hardware Coffee Bar. 150 Tyrwhitt Road.

The cafe was located in a commercial area for mostly hardware stores. The nearest MRT Stations were Farrer Park (North-East Line) and Lavender (East-West Line). It was actually in between these stations, so it's a good deal of a walk from both stations going to the cafe.

Nearby bus stops were the following:
For Lavender Street: Opposite Pek Chuan Building catering to bus service numbers 13, 67, 133, and 145. Hock Seng Building with the bus numbers just mentioned and 61, 107, 175, 961, 107M and 961C.

For Jalan Besar: Hoa Nam Building with bus service numbers 21, 23, 64, 65, 66, 67, 125, 130, 139, 147, 857.

Sun Ray Cafe

28.03.2013.

It was planned that I will go to Serangoon area today. I just want to see new things for a visual feast. What could I say? I enjoyed my stroll more than I had expected. I'm very much happy.

I have not much explored parts of North-East and going to Serangoon Garden Way is a first time. I basically know nothing of the area and the place I'm heading to. My challenge was to reach the cafe before it rained hard. I conquered the obstacle although drizzles meet me on the street. I also walked a good distance which is better, I guess.

image

image

Design. Sun Ray Cafe is an artsy type of cafe where pets are welcome. I'm not an animal-loving type of person so perhaps I'm not gonna visit there again. I'm glad that there wasn't any pet during my visit.

image
As I have said, the cafe was artsy and it was conspicuous in every corner of the place. Not even one wall could be described as plain. One thing that caught my attention was the blue hanging seat attached to the ceiling. It was placed in the entrance and impossible to miss. What welcomed me though upon entering the cafe were the baskets of artificial lavender. There was a light feeling to it and I love that kind of stuff.
image

image

I sat at the seat in the entrance because I can take better pictures there. It was an orange sofa and a coffee table, just beside the blue hanging seat. The wall behind me was painted with the cafe logo and embelished with cut-outs of cyling people. I believe that corner was the most colorful and artsy part of the cafe.

image

image

In the inner part of the cafe was nothing much besides seats and a few framed decors. It was before I left the cafe that I discovered the other side of the cafe where pets are allowed. It was only a more spacious area with more seats.

image

image

Another interesting thing was the white board above the bar counter. It was doodled with random things and signed by various people. There was also a clock shelf contaning random stuff as well...a jar filled with tin caps, squirel figures, and a music box made of glass.

image

image

The whole cafe has a cozy atmospehere and it was randomly artsy. I can't make out what was the theme of the cafe though.

image

image

Coffee and Pastry. I've ordered a tiramisu, iced mocha cafe and caramel cappuccino. The menu is interesting since they made alterations with the name. The cake selection was limited though.

image

The tiramisu was very good. The staff actually told me that they have a freshly made cake in the kitchen which was the tiramisu. I didn't like what they have in the cake display so I ordered what is not there.

image

I'm not exactly fond of tiramisu so I am saying that their tiramisu is nice. Maybe average to above average. It was not exactly special but it wasn't so bad as well.

image

The coffee was, well, weak if I may say so. It was not exactly to my liking. The cappuccino has a rich, thick foam. The hot coffee was actually better as compared to the iced one.

image

Service. The staff are accommodating and seems very carefree. There were not much customers when I came so they are free to move about. There are many of them on duty despite it being a lean hour. Actually, I'm not really certain if every person in there that I thought was a staff is really a staff.

image

The service was prompt. My orders were not delayed.

Whereabouts. Sun Ray Cafe. 79 Brighton Crescent. Located in the area of the Serangoon Garden Way.

The cafe was located in a residential area. Honestly speaking, it was not very accessible to the public. Well, my travel going there was more fun than I had expected which is favorable to me. It was really way off the city.

Being weird as I usually am, I walked all the way to the cafe from Lorong Chuan MRT Station. It was a good deal of walk to be honest. Even so, I was faascinated by the things I see during my walk and that made me enjoy my walk more than anything.

Bus services number 73, 136, 315 and 317 are available at the nearest bus stops which were Before and After Yio Chu Kang Road.
